Reflection: The “I am” sayings of Jesus have a direct consequence for you … and we look at one of these consequences by examining our first “you are” statement: “You are the salt of the earth.”
Our word “salary” comes from the word “salt.” This was because Roman soldiers were paid in part with salt. As those who have lived in hot climates can attest, without adequate salt, your body cramps up and you eventually die. Salt is not only essential for life; it also preserves and brings flavour to food.
Because Jesus is who he is, and because his Spirit flows through you, he calls you to bring life to people when physical and spiritual death threaten.
In a world characterised by meaningless blandness, and where good things are threatened by rot, you are to bring the flavour of truth, and preserve all things good.
This is your mission.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, You brought grace, hope and truth wherever you went. Please inspire and empower me by the Holy Spirit to do likewise, and so become “the salt of the earth.” Amen.
