Reflection: Remember, remember, remember
“…They called him King and Criminal
They didn’t call me Blessed
But benefactor to a substitute son
Token ties of kinship It tore at my heart.
Till the chill on the hill cramped my sore soul senseless
They called me Mother of Sorrows
“Spectator to tortured shoulders bearing the rise and fall.
The fall and rise of laboured breath.
The fall and the rise of Israel Hope for the hopeless
Eyewitness to sword-stabbed side
Pierced with purpose for my shame.
Could I still say The mighty one has done great things for me?
And holy is his name.
If Mary I were
“My sweat and bloody tears like wine vinegar sweet and sour
I licked.
And remembered him.
Gutted We broke bread and banqueted on his body.
But the dirge The song was not for long.
Death met defeat.
My son’s vindication sweet
God’s Son lives My princely pardon.
And I remember him
Remember him
Remember him

The purpose of remembering in the Bible, to my surprise, is not just to jostle my memory and my worship. Memorials are reminders to God; declarations before him. Let’s have more pauses in our day, yes, to say thank you…but also to declare the truth of grace.
Prayer:
Holy, mighty and immortal God, you have done great things for me:
lived like me so I can live;
crushed for me so I am whole;
living in me for your glory into your eternity.
Holy, mighty and immortal God, remember.
