Reflection: A legacy of serving
There are many idols that steal our commitment to God. We may start well in our relationship with God but end up on the wrong foot. Why? Think about money, politics, partners, music, children…we can idolise so many things that take the place of God. Our God, however, is a jealous God. He will not share his glory with anything or anyone (Exodus 42:8).
In the text, Joshua son of Nun admonishes the Israelites to remain loyal to the only true God. In essence, their allegiance cannot be in anything else apart from their Covenant God.
As we go out as a Bible Society staff in Bible engagement programs, we have encountered communities where a whole family is under the influence of deep-rooted cultural practices like witchcraft, which has impoverished them. The sad bit is that if it runs in the family; every generation upholds the tradition, including school going children who may not understand the gravity of the matter. Look, this is killing a whole generation! I am reminded of Daniel who lived among a people who did not know God. Whose influence in a nation of man-made gods was one to behold! The goal for him was to influence the whole nation of Babylon to know the Living True God.
Back to Joshua. His pledge was that even if others refused to serve God, he had made a choice with his family to always serve and live for the One God.
This can be the cry of your heart, too: that in a very secular world, you will live a legacy of serving God like Joshua. He finished well because his family truly served God. Fight the good fight and keep the legacy of serving God within your generations.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for this timely reminder to serve you only and do it with my household.
