Reflection: A legacy of fruitfulness.
A godly individual is worth emulating. Such a person clings to the word of God all their life and is not prone to the orientation of immoral people. They are favoured and blessed. Godliness is, however, only produced when one is dedicated to spending time in God’s presence in his word: reading, studying, meditating, memorising, and living out the very word.
Have you ever seen a tree in the oasis of a desert? During Bible distribution missions to schools in Northern Kenya we have come across such trees. We have seen life sprouting in such spaces, but only where there are signs of water. Such a tree grows wide and deep irrespective of the climate surrounding it. Why? It has a constant supply of water. Water refreshes and causes blooming and fruiting to happen.
The Psalmist reminds us that we can only thrive and bear fruit when we remain anchored on God’s word. The fruit represents the outpouring of what is in us. When we are constantly drawing from God, the life in us thrives and we can produce fruit through helping others… and not just fruit, as John’s Gospel reminds us of, but fruit that will last. Fruit that goes beyond us. A legacy, you may say, of fruitfulness! That benefit of pouring into others can only reach them when we are strongly connected to the word of God.
Prayer:Â Â Dear God, I desire to continually delight in your word, that I may always be refreshed and refresh others around me.
