Reflection
‘(T)he hope of heaven, as presented to us in Scripture, points to the grace, mercy, and generosity of a loving God.’ (Jon Nielson, Knowing God’s Truth: An Introduction to Systematic Theology, Crossway, 2023, p. 174).
The new heaven and earth represent God’s gift to humanity living in a world filled with suffering, chaos, and struggle. God doesn’t want his creation to linger in the old world; instead, he aims to provide a new world and heaven for those who faithfully believe in him. Our Living God refuses to let his chosen people remain confined in the current prison that restrains their lives, hindering them from looking ahead. He beckons his people to understand that life doesn’t always conclude in the present era but remains open to the birth of a future, a perspective of living in God’s kingdom that unveils new hope.
Heaven is a realm of God’s compassion. He loves his chosen people. He declares his intention to create a new heaven and a new earth, a place intentionally “created” for Israel. He mentions that the things of old are “not remembered” anymore. Israel’s rebellion, their hatred towards God, are not resurrected so that renewal can occur entirely on a clean slate, without “vengeance” nor bitter memory.
Our renewal occurs through his power and grace. We are called to manifest a new heart as we eagerly anticipate the second coming of Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus may your love and mercy be known and embraced by all, and may your name be exalted in every tribe, tongue, and nation. We submit ourselves to your will and ask for divine opportunities to fulfil the command to make disciples of all nations.
