Reflection
Jesus Christ is a figure brimming with compassion. His heart is consistently moved with empathy for the suffering endured by humanity. The term “moved with compassion,” in the Greek language, illustrates the profound depth of Jesus’ emotions in response to human suffering.
This is why the Lord Jesus is always prepared to heal all diseases suffered by humans. his heart is stirred with compassion when he observes the condition of people before him (9:36), likening them to sheep without a shepherd — harassed and helpless (Matthew 9:37). Israel’s religious leaders failed to shepherd the people of Israel with kindness and mercy. The Pharisees and other religious leaders judged, intimidated, and bullied the people into adhering to rules and procedures not even found in the Law of Moses. The people are defenceless against these leaders since their participation in the worship of God and the life of the community depends on the approval of these men.
Therefore, Jesus called his disciples to, alongside him, manifest his compassion for his people.
Have you demonstrated your love to God’s people?
