Reflection: Is suffering with cancer, or any other severe health issue, the same as martyrdom?
Only slightly.
The excruciating agony of physical torture… and dwelling on the prospect of imminent torture, cannot be imagined. And the scream of the soul at seeing a loved one brutalised and killed cannot be compared to anything. That is why I will be cheering with every fibre of my being when the martyrs parade behind Jesus in his victory march.
There is only one area where my suffering is similar to that of the martyrs, and that is in sharing the privilege of being faithful in it.
Faithfulness is the gift I can bring to the Father… and it is the gift the martyrs bring.
I don’t think there is anything left to say.
Prayer: Dear Father, I have nothing to give other than my faithfulness. But, I’m not very good at it. Please forgive me and strengthen me… for my heart’s desire is to give you joy. Amen.
