Reflection: As I battle the weariness and inconvenience of cancer… and learn to live in a world that is significantly smaller than I’m used to, I think of Job in the Old Testament. He is an inspiration.
God allows Satan to test Job with every vile affliction possible, short of killing him. As a result, Job loses his family, his possessions, his health and his reputation in the community.
Yet, in the midst of these evil afflictions Job says this: “I know that my Redeemer lives.”
In saying this, Job is nailing a stake of certainty into the ground––in defiance of all his suffering. He is saying that his God is the one who will redeem him… and that his God is the one true God who exists; in other words, he is the one who “lives.”
And we can say the same about Jesus. We know that our redeemer lives. Resurrection life is a certainty, and you and I are invited to be part of it.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, You are not the invention of a nation or a culture. Neither are you a man-made philosophy. You came in history, lived, died and rose from the dead. You paid a dreadful price in order to rescue me into the Father’s kingdom. You truly are my redeemer. Amen.
