Reflection:
The temptation of Adam and Eve sees them tragically succumb to the devious lies of Satan. They craved a false freedom and self-rule, with devastating consequences for all humans and creation. The concept of seeing and perception — ‘the eyes’ — is mentioned twice in this account. The first mention is in verse 6, where the fruit seemed ‘pleasing to the eye’, a seductive view which was falsely perceived as good, when it was not. The other reference is Adam and Eve’s realisation of what they had done — their eyes were opened to the truth of their treachery. They experienced shame, and sought to hide it with their coverings.
Sin’s reach is total, fracturing the goodness of God’s creation in all domains. God’s goodness in creation can still be observed, but it is marred.
Many things tempt our eyes with something ‘better’ than God’s goodness, yet fail to deliver, often with dire consequences. In sport, the temptation to distort and satisfy our desires is rampant. We celebrate the achievements of World Record performances, only to learn that performance enhancing drugs were needed. Whether it’s for patriotism or self-glory, sport becomes something less. Cheating and disrespect of our opponents are justified in a win-at-all-costs mantra. And we are left grieving for something lost, and desiring truth and beauty.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for the opportunity to live, breathe and enjoy your good creation. I repent and ask for your forgiveness for the times my eyes have been captivated by the world’s false riches, rather than your glory. Strengthen me, through your Spirit, to choose good over evil today and always. In Jesus’ name, amen.
