Reflection: Not by works
I once was dead in sin, alone and hopeless
A child of wrath, I walked condemned in darkness
But Your mercy brought new life, and in Your loving kindness
Raised me up with Christ and made me righteous
You have bought me back with the riches of
Your amazing grace and relentless love
I’m made alive forever with You, life forever
By Your grace I’m saved (by Your grace I’m saved)
Lord, You are the light that broke the darkness
You satisfy my soul when I am heartless
If ever I forget my true identity
Show me who I am, and help me to believe
My sin has been erased
I’ll never be the same
My sin has been erased
I’ll never be the same
Made Alive, Citizens

Not by works.
I struggle with the need to do stuff and fix stuff when faced with a problem. Particularly having studied engineering, I feel the overwhelming need to understand how stuff works, and then to do something about it!
I don’t read instructions before building stuff, and generally don’t like committees as they can involve protracted (i.e., meaningless) chatter. So, today’s passage has been one I come back to quite often. I was dead in my sin. It is by grace and grace alone that I am saved. Nothing I have done or will do makes any difference as far as my salvation is concerned. Yet even a wretched sinner like me is loved enough by God that he sent his Son to die for us. And not only die, but seat us with him in heaven.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we give you thanks that it is not by works, but by grace we are saved. We were dead in our sin, condemned in darkness. Your mercy brought new life and, in your love, and kindness, raised us up with Christ and made us righteous. You have bought us back with the riches of your amazing grace and relentless love. We’re made alive forever with you, life forever. By your grace we are saved, by your grace I’m saved. Amen.
