Reflection: The Creed
Our Father everlasting
The all creating One
God Almighty
Through Your Holy Spirit
Conceiving Christ the Son
Jesus our Saviour
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the Name of Jesus
Our Judge and our Defender
Suffered and crucified
Forgiveness is in You
Descended into darkness
You rose in glorious life
Forever seated high
I believe in life eternal
I believe in the virgin birth
I believe in the saints’ communion
And in Your holy Church
I believe in the resurrection
When Jesus comes again
For I believe in the Name of Jesus

Ever wondered why we recite creeds at church?
I’m kind of a lazy reader. I have to read a lot for work and I’m relatively impatient. I LOVE a good executive summary or synopsis to give me the full picture at a high level. That’s how I think about the Apostles’ Creed.
The Apostles’ Creed expresses essential biblical doctrines as found in our passage today. We are saved if we place our faith in Christ. Christ died for our sins. He rose again on the third day.
An abbreviated version of the Apostles Creed seems to date back to the second century, despite there being no direct evidence that the Apostles were involved in its development. If we look back to the fifth century, we can see the Apostles’ Creed in its current form. The Creed has since been useful to Christians for centuries, to remind us of the essence of our faith. It has been used across denominations.
God’s saving works are powerful. And his word endures forever. Read over our passage again and listen to the lyrics in the song.
Prayer: “I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.”
