Reflection: Joshua was one of the most important figures in the history of the Israelites and had many successes and victories. However, one of the most important aspects of his successes was having his home devoted to the Lord. Before passing away, Joshua gathered all the Israelites and their leaders and encouraged them to cling to the Lord. He proudly stated: “Choose for yourself whom you will serve … but as for me and my household we will serve the Lord.”
I imagine that there is no greater joy at the end of one’s life than seeing all one’s family members serving the Lord. Children are a gift from the Lord, and our main responsibility is to live sincerely before the Lord, pray for our children and share God’s love with them.
In the Bible, there are many examples of godly families. For example, the house of Zacharias and Elisabeth who were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. God granted them John the Baptist who was a joy and delight to his parents, and many rejoiced because of his birth. He was great in the sight of the Lord.
On the contrary, we read about Eli’s children, whom the Bible described as “scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord”. They committed horrible sins in the tabernacle. God blamed Eli: “Why do you kick at my sacrifice and my offering … and honor your sons more than me?” (1 Samuel 2:29).
May the Lord bless our homes so that we may follow God’s words: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)
Each year, Bible Society of Egypt provides thousands of free Bibles to students. For many, this is the only Bible in the home! In one village, the Illustrated Gospel of Luke was distributed. As the team left, they saw a boy, sitting on his doorstep, with his mother, father and sister, reading to his family, and showing them the pictures.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we pray for our homes that you come and fill them with your love, peace and hope. Help us live sincerely before you and share your love with all our family members. Amen.
