Roots, Shoots & Fruits

Day 7 of 14

NIV

Psalm 92:12-15

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, ‘The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.’

Reflection

I’ve noticed several articles in the news recently about the difficulties faced by older workers in seeking new employment. Our society values youth rather than the experience and wisdom of age.

Can we genuinely be fruitful for God in every stage of life? I see an answer in a dear friend who is approaching her 90th birthday and lives with relentless pain. Her mind is sharp but her body doesn’t allow her to continue serving in the ministries she loved when she was younger.

As life changes, has she quietly given up and declared, “I’ve done my bit”? Not at all! Her genuine love for people means she has never become irrelevant or unneeded. She can still listen, care and pray. Her phone is never silent, her home welcomes visitors several times a week. Those who leave walk away blessed and encouraged. She truly bears fruit in old age.

Question

Whatever your stage of life right now – how are you bearing fruit? Or, is God calling you to a new season of fruitfulness – what might that look like?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the elderly in our midst. Help us to honour them and to value their contribution to our lives. Lord, in this season of my life, show me how I can faithfully serve you in whatever way you are calling me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
