Reflection:
To be hopeful is to believe that God does want to help us. The gift of hope is a precious gift from God because it allows us to know God has good will toward us. When things go wrong, a person with hope still believes God will work things out for his or her well-being and happiness. The hope from God corresponds well with the desire for happiness that God puts in the heart of everyone. When Abraham was a childless old man, he “in hope believed [in God’s promise that his descendants will be countless] and so became the father of many nations” (Romans 4:18).
To strengthen our Christian hope, we can first pray that we want to surrender our failures and anxieties to God. We can then ask God to show us the promises that God has for us, just so that we can begin to see how our future can be sustained by God’s grace.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for your assurance that the hope you give me will work powerfully in my life. I pray that my life will be shaped by hope and not despair. May I see my life and my future as you want me to see them.
