In the Meantime: Images of the In-Between

Day 5 of 11

NIV

2 Corinthians 4:7-10

‘But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.’ 2 Corinthians 4:7-10, NASB

Reflection:  Treasure in Some Ol’ Jar

I grew up near some of the most ancient archaeological digs and saw for myself that there’s nothing more commonly unearthed than broken pottery. Commonplace, fragile and ubiquitous. You see, it’s not about the jar. It’s about the treasure in the jar.

God’s mission is to bring light to our dark world. Our privileged co-mission is to carry that light – the Good News of Jesus Christ. Paul reminds us that we do that not with glitz and fanfare but in earthly-weakness and humility; bruised, even broken and beaten. Why? Because it’s not about the jar. It’s about the treasure in the jar.

Prophets and priests only had an inkling of this treasure. Angels marvel at this treasure. Saints and martyrs have lived and died sharing this treasure. And you and I, having been transformed by this treasure, are split and spilt to pass it on. Because the hero of the story is the treasure.

Prayer:  Shine as a light in the world, to the glory of God the Father. * It’s with renewed gratitude and wonder, Father, that I remember the treasure of the Gospel – your awesome saving grace. It’s with renewed passion, in humility and by your powerful Spirit that I re-commit myself today to pass it on.
