Reflection: Vigilant Bridesmaids (Or Not)
The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”’ Matthew 25:10b-13
Here’s a pretty picture of maidens in diaphanous gowns and bare feet prancing through narrow cobblestone streets with flickering lamps. They’re eagerly on their way to meet the imminent bridegroom. Seems they’re dressed for the occasion. They look prepared…but some are maybe presuming only on their looks. Because in the waiting…and the resting…their lamplight dies. The cry goes out, “The bridegroom’s here!” Lamps at the ready but no oil. Only some have really come prepared. They have extra oil. So, only some will meet their bridegroom because only some are the real bride.
Not such a pretty story after all.
What cuts through pretence? What breeds hope? What inspires faithfulness? Blatant, even brutal warnings cast a necessary and menacing shadow over the now-and-not-yet. This and numerous other stories paint a sobering picture of ‘card-carrying Christians’ who miss out.
The foolish virgins begged the wise, ‘Share your oil with us.’ ‘Sorry. You’ll have to buy your own or we’ll all run out.’ But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom arrived…the banquet began…and the doors were closed. *
* V8-10 paraphrased
Prayer: Holy Spirit, guard me and your church from hypocrisy, faithlessness and deceit. Were I not to take your warnings seriously I would be presuming on your grace, Lord, because, ‘There but for your love and grace go I.’ I’m on tiptoe to see you and your kingdom come. Energize my vigilance in this living hope.
