Reflection: You Never Graduate from Serving
(Further reading: John 13:12-17)
Serving others is foundational to our faith. Jesus taught and modelled this through his ministry. In Matthew 20:28 he says, “the son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
At the Last Supper, when he took up a towel and served the disciples by washing their feet, Jesus made it clear that they were to follow his example and serve each other.
In John 13:12-17, Jesus asks, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” … I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
Jesus’ act of humility and service up to the end of his earthly ministry shows that we never ‘graduate’ from serving; in fact, ministry itself is serving others. The Apostle Paul introduces himself in the book of Titus as, “Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ.” While “apostle” may seem the more noble title, Paul recognised that he was a servant first, and an apostle second, because serving is the priority in the Kingdom.
In Matthew 20:25-28, Jesus contrasts world authority with Kingdom greatness: “whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” Serving is the priority in the Kingdom of God.
Do you desire greatness? Has God put BIG dreams within you? I hope so! Remember, that greatness is achieved through serving others. You never graduate from serving; you only graduate to serving. What can you do to serve others today?
Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for the example of servanthood you set. Help me to follow your example and serve others with humility and love. Help me to always remember that true greatness in your Kingdom is found in serving others. Amen.
