Series Introduction
Serving others is at the heart of our faith. Throughout his life, Jesus showed us that true servanthood is not an obligation, but a calling and act of love. In this series, we’ll explore the biblical foundation of serving, how it shapes our purpose, and how embracing a servant’s heart leads to spiritual growth. Our prayer is for you to experience this joy and fulfilment that comes from serving in the house of God!
Reflection: Modelling The Life of Christ
“…even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” — Matthew 20:28 (ESV)
‘Therefore, Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way.”’ — John 5:19 (NASB)
A blueprint is a detailed plan to get something done. When it comes to our mission in life, Jesus laid down a blueprint for our mission in life: to serve others, just as he came down from heaven to serve us. Since we are all made in the image of God our Father, we have an inbuilt desire to serve, and our potential and purpose are fully realised when we follow Jesus’ example. As Christians we know this to be true in our spirits, however, we are sometimes overcome by a “not enough mindset”. We may think, “I don’t have enough time, energy, capacity or money to serve”, or even convince ourselves, “I’m not good enough to serve.” However, Jesus teaches us that our capacity to serve isn’t about our resources, but our willingness to give up our comfort to serve others in obedience to God.
After all, Jesus gave himself up to death as a ransom for us, and the joy of seeing us free outweighed the pain he endured. In the same way, the joy we find in serving others and the approval from God far surpass the cost of serving. Serving may require commitment and sacrifice, but the reward far outweighs the cost.
If servanthood mattered to Jesus, it should matter to us. Serving reflects the true nature of Christ, and when we serve out of love, we access a new measure of God’s blessing. Don’t allow limited thinking to stop you from serving. Instead, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1) and follow his blueprint!
Prayer:
Jesus, help me to overcome my limited mindset and embrace the call to serve others. As I serve, may I find joy in giving of myself, reflecting your love and character in all I do. Amen.
