Reflection: Don’t let creation be muted
All things were made for God (Col 1:16) and creation points to his glory, power and goodness. Outside of Scripture, the creation serves as our most complete and spectacular physical evidence of Christ’s reality and splendour* (Romans 1:20). Today creation is being muted and has diminished ability to declare the glory of God.
Rachael Carson warned of a ‘Silent Spring’ in her groundbreaking book of that title in 1962. Sadly, her predictions are coming true. A recent study found that the diversity and intensity of nature’s acoustics are indeed being silenced, with a devastating 69% decline on average of monitored mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish in wildlife populations over the last 48 years.
There are many reasons why Christians should care for creation. We care for creation because it belongs to the one whom we call Lord. We care for creation as an act of love towards our neighbour, knowing that healthy, functioning environments are more likely to meet the physical needs of people dependent on them, while reducing the risk of severe impact from natural disasters. Today, let’s reflect on this reason: we care for creation because it points people to the Creator.
