9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Reflection:
If God came into the world, what is the greatest gift that he could give us? Life? Wealth? Comfort? The answer in John 1 when Jesus came into the world is this: “he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
The highest gift was to become a child of God, just as Jesus is.
What is the gift you desire from God? What is the gift he has given you?
Prayer:
Father, thank you for Jesus—the true light, the Word, your Son. Help me to be your child, as Jesus was and is, to aspire to grace and truth as he did. Amen.
