Reflection: Give me the sense of a necessary Saviour: light and darkness
Of all the disciples, John has the reputation of being the most ‘sensitive’. You could say, ‘touchy-feely’. In the next few days, we’ll discover how that nuances his rendition of the incarnation.
Kapow! He starts with no ancestry, no angel portents, not even a hint of the first 30 years of the Christ-baby/boy/man. Just poetry. A primordial, personifying poem.* Don’t go anywhere! says John. Not until you sense and embrace this dark scene and sublime mystery.
Reaching back into the thrill of creation, John scoops a handful of light…and one of darkness:
One, the essence of life, the other, the absence of life-light.
Examine the light, some do…but comprehend, recognise, we don’t.
One handful radiates life, the other consumes it.
But extinguish the life-light, the dark cannot.
This epic scenario needs a resolution! How will light penetrate and dispel the dark?
Help! we readers cry. Help make some human sense of this divine exposé.
And that’s exactly what comes next.
You and I glimpse divine restitution in person.
And this, this is where John’s storytelling begins:
Eye-witness accounts of God’s Son kicking up dirt in our neighbourhood;
Radiating glory, grace and truth so that we might perceive, believe and receive the Light.
Prayer:
“Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.” (Evening Prayer—Book of Common Prayer)
*John 1:1-5,9-13,16-18
Keep in mind: Through words and acts God reveals himself, but supremely, in person and presence: Whoever has seen Jesus Christ has seen God the Father. (see John 14:5)
