The Taste and Smell of Glory: Aesthetics and Faith

Day 8 of 14

NIV

Matthew 2:1-2

‘…a band of scholars…observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled [the birth of] …the leader who will shepherd-rule…[God’s] people.’ Matthew 2:1-2 MSG ‘… [the shepherds] hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word …[and] returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.’ Luke 2:16-17,20, NIV

Reflection: The Gospel: glorious news

You want to meet with God? Here’s the greatest wonder: you can!

You can ‘go and find him’.

It was a terrifying but quiet invitation first to shepherds…and they paved the way for us too, to seek and find. A calm word to unassuming herdsmen was drowned out by, like the choir of heavenly hosts at creation, a cosmic crescendo of angel voices. I imagine they couldn’t help but explode with worship at the good news: joy…for everyone…today…a Saviour born! The one for whom you’ve longed and hoped! Oh, belt it out, all creation! “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.”

You can glean something of the gospel from every page of God’s word (a challenge left for more than a rainy day). By divine intention there are glimmers everywhere of what all creation awaits: the glory of God in Christ bringing the world to himself. Aren’t God’s gracious initiatives beautiful and full of wonder!

Prayer:

In love, holy God, you don’t just shepherd-rule but gather us up and carry us close.

So comfort-close to become a lamb, oh Lamb of God

That Life be reclaimed, you surrendered yours

In doing so, so-sated every need; grace satiated my every need

So that life is with mercy, goodness and beauty-branded both now and into eternity–

My forever-home, where I’ll worship you the Lamb who is my Shepherd.

[Pause; re-read; be lost for words.]
