Reflection
I can only imagine the perils of the journey the pilgrims underwent to celebrate in Jerusalem. No doubt this song would have come to mind as their journey took them into the shadows and the beauty of the mountains along the way. Yet they saw their help not in the beauty, strength and splendour of the mountains that erode, but in God who created all that they saw.
As their eyes lifted to those mountains, a greater thought invaded their natural wonder of the scenery through which they passed. It is that God is ALWAYS watching over them. In fact, this thought is so pronounced that the author mentions it on six occasions in this song alone.
I find myself in my daily journey having thoughts of ‘aloneness’ invade my thinking. ‘No one else knows what I am going through, nor does anyone understand’, are the whispers into my heart from the dark places of my mind. When the whispers become too loud, this Psalm becomes my greatest comfort. There is NEVER a time where God abandons me – his ‘watch’ over me is ‘both now and forever.’ Even the majesty of the mountains is no match for this thought.
Prayer
Dear Lord God, I am so thankful that you have reminded me that every day you, oh God, watch over me. When I look at creation itself it only reminds me that you created the heavens and earth itself. Yet you watch over me personally, Lord. I am beyond words in describing how this makes me feel. My heart cries out to you in thankfulness.
