Reflection: To Seek and be Found
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father…”, John 10:14-15a
A revolutionary concept was introduced by Jeremiah. His words emphasise that the knowledge of God will no longer be limited to a select few but will be accessible to all. Every individual can have a personal and intimate knowledge of God. This prophetic insight from Jeremiah sets the stage for Jesus’ words in John 10 to come into sharp focus.
Jesus’ declaration in John 10:14 invites us to reflect on the profound nature of our relationship with him. He compares it to the intimate bond between a shepherd and his sheep. Jesus not only claims to know his sheep, but he also affirms that his sheep know him.
This reciprocal experience that we have with our creator is beyond mere intellectual understanding; it delves into a deep, personal connection with our Saviour. As we meditate on these words, we are invited to embrace the transformative power of knowing and being known by Jesus, the good shepherd.
The Lord knows you: he doesn’t just know about you (the circumstances of your life); he knows you personally (your desires, your fears and your needs). It is the “Lord who knows you” who is your guide.
You know the Lord: this is not a one-way knowledge. You are also a partner in this mutual knowing. In your walk with God, the Lord’s desire is that you may know him intimately. In 1 John 5:20, John writes, “We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true.”
This is God’s general will for your life. God’s plan is for you eventually to know him as fully as he knows you (see 1 Corinthians 13:12).
Prayer: Dear Lord, as I embark on the journey of seeking, I humbly ask for your guidance and presence. Help me to diligently search for you, knowing that as I seek, I will be found by you. May my heart be open to your leading and my spirit receptive to your presence, as I long to be found in the depths of your love and grace.
