Reflection: Characters of Christmas: Simeon
According to Jewish law, 40 days after the birth of a male child he was to be taken to the Temple that a sacrifice of purification might be made. It was there that Mary, Joseph and Jesus met Simeon. Simeon is “righteous and devout” and, like all the godly saints under the old covenant, he’s waiting for “the consolation of Israel”. He’s waiting for the Messiah, and the Spirit has told him he will see the Messiah before he dies.
Since “the Holy Spirit is on him” (v.25) when he sees Jesus, he immediately recognizes him. He sings a song, rejoicing that the long-awaited salvation has come. Simeon knew that God had a plan of salvation for both Jew and Gentile. He lived to see the first stage of the fulfilment of that plan. He is a model for us to follow. We trust God’s promise and are waiting for the complete transformation of all things, when God will make the wilderness like an Eden (Isaiah 51:3, Revelation 22:1-3).).
Simeon’s song is an old one, but for a world in desperate need of hope, it’s a song for today.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you sent the Lord Jesus to bring to all people the knowledge of salvation. I look forward to the Day when he comes again to finally and fully redeem his people. Come, Lord Jesus.
