Reflection: Characters of Christmas: John
Soon after she discovered that the angel’s word had come true and she was pregnant, Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth. Elizabeth, too, had received a wonderful gift from God – the birth of a son.
Luke, then, records a remarkable event. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. Earlier, we were told that this baby would have the Spirit from his mother’s womb and prepare the people for the Lord’s coming (1:17). John’s work as a Spirit-filled prophet would be to point people to Jesus. Even in the womb John began this work. He recognized he was in the presence of deity and majesty.
All those in Elizabeth’s house respond with joy at the news Mary brings – even the unborn John. He “leaped for joy” in his mother’s womb (v.44).
John exemplifies two marks of any person who is filled with the Holy Spirit. First, they will recognize who Jesus is and testify of their faith in him. Second, they will respond with joy and praise at meeting Jesus for their Lord and Saviour has come to them.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray that you will fill me with your Spirit that I might love and honour the Lord Jesus. Empower me to faithfully testify to Jesus so that many might honour and worship him. Amen.
