Reflection:
In the context of the book of Jeremiah, today’s passage about healing and restoration refers to the nation of Israel. The Israelites had been taken into captivity by the Babylonians and were oppressed and persecuted and dispersed. How could this happen to God’s chosen people? God wanted to let them know (through the prophet Jeremiah) that he was still in control even when things looked completely hopeless.
The same can be expected in our personal walk with God. There were certainly times in PNG when my family had health issues, accidents, and we were regularly reminded that we were ‘outsiders’ (Waitskins). While we were not in exile, we were also not ‘home’ and the heart ached for home at times, just like the people of Zion.
In this sin-tainted world, we will all suffer in some way or another. But our suffering is not because God does not care. He tells us repeatedly that he loves us and will never leave us. He restores health, binds wounds, and is a friend for the outcast. And when this life finally does end, he is with us for eternity.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you that you will never leave me nor forsake me. Thank you that you are walking beside me in this journey called life and that no matter what happens, we will always be together. Lord, yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
