Names of Jesus

Day 1 of 14

NIV

Revelation 22:12-13

"Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

Reflection: Alpha and Omega: Jesus proclaimed himself to be the Alpha and Omega on a number of occasions in the book of Revelation. This is a significant way to describe himself. Being the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet, Jewish Rabbi’s would often use Alpha and Omega to create a sense of wholeness, or fulfilment. When Jesus described himself in this way, we believe it to be a further confirmation of His being at the beginning of all things, and that He will be there at the end of time.

A second meaning of Alpha and Omega is that Jesus is being described as the God of the Old Testament. In Isaiah 44 Jesus is described as the first and the last, part of the triune God from the beginning. This is both amazing and comforting all at once.

For us as Christians, we see Jesus as the fulfilment of the promises of the Old Testament, and God’s plan for restoration and reconciliation for all of mankind.

We praise God that in His kindness, He gave us Jesus to be all that we need, having been there from the beginning, as part of God’s plan for the salvation of the world.

Prayer: Thank you God for Jesus. Thank you for your wonderful provision in giving us the name of Alpha and Omega for Jesus, in order that we might deepen our trust in your plans for us. May we rely on you more and more as we live our lives in praise of you, God. Amen
