Reflection:
Yesterday we said that a person can be led astray by what he or she gives their attention and agreement to.
How do we guard ourselves, and our loves ones, from being led astray by false teaching? Avoid getting isolated (see 1 Peter 5:8). Here are two ways to do this.
First, don’t be afraid of questions. It is completely normal for Christians (and everyone else) to have questions about God and the Bible. Questions are good because they can lead to truth, and all truth is God’s truth. The question is — who do you (and your friends) take your questions to? I encourage you to bring your questions to pastors, and people trained in the Bible and theology, much like you’d want a trained surgeon to treat your broken leg rather than an untrained person using Google.
Second, don’t let yourself or your friends get isolated. It’s possible to spend time with people without meaningfully connecting with them. As well as talking about surface-level and impersonal matters, connect heart to heart. Ask questions like: What’s going on in your life? What do you long for and dream for? What have you been pondering lately? What is your main prayer request at the moment? What questions are you wrestling with?
Prayer:
Thank you, Father, that you are not intimidated by any questions I have now, or in the future. Lead my friends and I to knowledgeable and trustworthy people we can talk to about our questions. As well as having fun with my friends I resolve to connect with them heart to heart and ask, Holy Spirit, that you’d keep me on track.
