Reflection: Yesterday we focused on Jesus’ atoning sacrifice on the cross for the sins of humankind. But how, exactly, do individual human beings attain the benefit of that sacrifice? How, as it were, do we “tap into” Jesus’ perfect holiness? The answer is to put one’s faith in him and to continue in that faith come what may.
Through faith, we enjoy the promise of God’s grace: we are “justified” in his sight. At the final judgement, God will not count our sins against us (2 Cor. 5:18-19); better still, because of our union with Christ, his perfect holiness will be imputed to us (Rom. 3:20-22; 2 Tim. 4:8). All these ideas are encapsulated in today’s magnificent passage.
Question: Do you ever worry that you will not be able to continue in your faith?
Prayer: Father, I know that my faith is itself a gracious gift from you. Uphold and sustain me in a faith which is established and firm, so that I may continue in it for the rest of my life on Earth, and be presented holy in Jesus’ sight. Amen
