Reflection: We have concentrated in this series on the vital importance of trying to be holy. However, our own unaided efforts are bound to fail. Thankfully, all true believers receive the spur, aid and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. It is the Spirit who transforms us (2 Cor. 3:18) and leads us into holiness (Rom. 8:4). Jesus himself promised that he and the Father would send this “Paraclete” or “Counselor” – first to the disciples (Jn. 16:13-14) and in due course to other believers. Today’s passage marks the moment in Jerusalem, at Pentecost, six weeks after the crucifixion, when the disciples made their first Spirit-born converts.
In the words of J.I. Packer, “for all who have come to faith since Pentecost morning … the receiving of the Spirit in full new-covenant blessing has been one aspect of their conversion and new birth”.
Question: Can you feel the Spirit working within you to make you more holy?
Prayer: Father, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit. I confess that the Spirit’s operation is an inscrutable mystery to me. But may he continue to speak to me, search me, teach me, enlighten me, intercede for me, and lead me into holiness. Amen.
