4Then the Lord called Samuel.
Samuel answered, “Here I am.” 5And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
6Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”
7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
8A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
Reflection:
What does God’s voice sound like? When he was a young man, the prophet Samuel didn’t know the answer to that question. When he first heard God call his name, he confused it with his mentor in the next room. But Samuel soon learned. Over time, he became one of the most accurate prophets of the ancient world and the prototype of all prophets to come. Just like any relationship, it takes time to get to know God’s voice. We get to recognize his voice more as we learn about his character and the kinds of things he would say. God’s voice is always good and always kind. It always brings hope, joy, peace and the fruit of the Spirit. Like Samuel, we need to position our hearts to hear from God and say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
Has God ever spoken to you? What did he sound like?
Prayer:
Lord, sometimes like Samuel I have trouble recognising your voice. Please teach me what your voice sounds like. Amen.
