My daughter loves to write us notes and gather one of her belongings to wrap up and give to us. She gave me several sheets from her new butterfly sticker book recently. A small gesture but driven by a generous heart. My heart melted at her excitement when I stuck one of the butterflies on to my planner page for the day.
The core of generosity is kindness and a desire to make a difference in someone else’s life. It recognises the value of what we have (time, resources, wisdom) and the benefit that would bring to someone else’s need. I didn’t need stickers but I did need that encouragement of being seen and appreciated.
Generosity is wrapped up in how we act justly and love kindness and mercy. It becomes the outworking of this. Let’s have eyes to see where justice and kindness is needed in our homes, communities and worlds. Let’s recognise the value of what we can contribute, even if it seems small.
Question
What is a small act of generosity that you can make today?
Prayer
Lord, help us not to be so wrapped up in ourselves that we miss the need around us. Show us how to be generous today. Amen.
