When going on a road trip, it’s best to have at least a rough plan and map of where you are going. The feeling of being lost and clueless on how to get to your destination is a pretty uncomfortable feeling.
Life is often compared to a journey. The greatest times of unrest are often caused when we are unsure where things are headed (a relationship, job, health). This would certainly have been true for the Israelites when these words in Jeremiah were given. They were in exile in a foreign land, without their king, temple, or country, and could have easily felt abandoned by God. He comforts them with the knowledge that although life will feel uncertain at times, they can trust that he has a good plan. He also says to us now that he’s working in all things for good (Romans 8:28). We might feel lost, but God has the perfect aerial view of our path and destination. This is why when we are feeling lost we should ask Him for help and guidance. He knows the way, and what is best for us.
