Chase Joy - Part 1

Day 3 of 3

NIV

Psalms 127:3

3Children are a heritage from the Lord,

offspring a reward from him.

I found out I was pregnant at 3am in the emergency room. We came close to losing our baby as all signs pointed to miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. I am so grateful for the gift that she is to us. I have walked with many friends as they battle fertility issues, grieve miscarriages or face huge challenges with their children. As mums, we know that our children are incredible gifts but we can lose sight of that in the midst of the daily grind.

When the Bible talks about children being a gift it’s often about carrying on the family line, and provision for parents in old age. But there can be more. My daughter is also a gift in other ways: she’s my joy mentor. She interrupts my rush out to the car to point out the beautiful cloud formations. I am invited to dance with her to a song playing at the shops. The elevator becomes a magic box transporting us somewhere new.  She gives me the gift of delighting in everyday moments. I have to choose to allow the interruptions that bring the joy.

Question:
In what ways are your children a gift in your life?

Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for the gift of my children. Help me not to take that for granted but have eyes to see the ways they help me to grow. Amen

Psalms 127:1-5

Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

1Unless the Lord builds the house,

the builders labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the guards stand watch in vain.

2In vain you rise early

and stay up late,

toiling for food to eat—

for he grants sleep to those he loves.

3Children are a heritage from the Lord,

offspring a reward from him.

4Like arrows in the hands of a warrior

are children born in one’s youth.

5Blessed is the man

whose quiver is full of them.

They will not be put to shame

when they contend with their opponents in court.
