Reflection:
As a young Christian, I remember more than one time when I was faced with a decision between several possible choices. In each case I wanted to choose one thing, but when I prayed about it, I discerned the Lord wanted me to do the opposite. For me, each occasion became a test. Would I obey?
Here’s the point: I had to settle the issue of authority in my life. As a Christian, the authority issue never entirely goes away, but establishing a norm is essential. The norm is: God’s children obey him.
Do you know why I obeyed him? It’s because I trusted God and believe that he knows best.
The messaging of our culture is that God’s commands are bad, burdensome, restrictive, and steal our joy. James 1:27 makes it clear God’s commands are beautiful. (For more on this, check out Matthew 5:43-48.) My experience of God’s commands, and the experience of God’s people for thousands of years, is that they are freeing, life-bringing, and good.
Have you settled the authority issue in your life? Do you routinely obey God? If no, do you really believe that you know better than God? If yes, why do you do this?
Prayer:
Lord, your commands are my delight, they are my counsellors. Help me to run the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free. Thank you that I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments. (Inspired by Psalm 119:24, 32, 45)
