Do you ever get to the end of the day and think about all the ways you failed as a mum? Maybe you yelled at your kids, or you were selfish with your time and energy, or you think of all the good intentions you had but didn’t follow through on…
Nothing brings out our desire to do the right thing like motherhood. And nothing exposes our sin and failings like motherhood.
The passage above from Nehemiah tells about the time when Israel was confronted with God’s holy law, after many generations of ignorance. Their response was an overwhelming grief when they realised the depths of their sin. But Nehemiah told them not to wallow, but to celebrate because God’s joy would be their strength.
While we might naturally feel like wallowing in guilt and shame at the end of a tough day of mothering, God calls us to turn to Him in joy and thanksgiving. He’s already taken the punishment for our sins, and we don’t have to carry around guilt anymore.
Question
How has motherhood exposed your sin lately? Where do you need to turn back to God and joyfully embrace His forgiveness?
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for your joy and your forgiveness. Please help me to repent of my sin each day. Please help me to find my strength in you, and not in my own goodness. Amen.
