Series Introduction
Join Adam Burt, CEO of megavoice Australia, in this 7-day journey aligning our lives with the wisdom of God; not only for our personal growth but to make a lasting impact on the world around us. In Proverbs 9:1, we read, “Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars.” From the rest of Proverbs, and Scripture in general, seven characteristics commonly linked with wisdom can be unpacked: Discretion, Understanding, Prudence, Knowledge, Counsel, Integrity, and Fear of the Lord. We will consider how we can live out these ‘pillars of wisdom’ in our own lives and as part of a global effort to bring the gospel to those in need.
Reflection: Wisdom’s first pillar: Discretion
Wisdom in the Bible is not just intellectual knowledge; it is a lifestyle marked by godly character and action.
James 1:12 reminds us of the eternal reward awaiting those who remain faithful through trials. This verse speaks not only of perseverance but also of the assurance that God sees and honours those who endure suffering for his sake. For many Christians living in hostile environments, this promise is a source of hope and strength. The “crown of life” symbolises eternal life with God, a gift far greater than any hardship they may face. However, the reality of their trials is harsh — persecution, imprisonment, and even death. Yet, through faith, they cling to the promise that their endurance is not in vain.
For persecuted Christians to maintain access to the gospel, discretion is often their greatest ally. It is not just about reading God’s word; it is about survival. In my work with megavoice Australia, I’ve witnessed the importance of recognising this need and developing secure, discreet methods to bring Scripture to believers in these dangerous regions. In James, we are reminded that God honours those who endure. As they stand firm in the face of persecution, we are called to support them, protecting their identities and helping them access the life-giving word in ways that ensure their safety.
As we reflect on this passage, let us consider how we, too, might be tested in our faith and how we can help others persevere in their trials. Just as God promises the crown of life to those who love him, we are reminded that our efforts to support and protect persecuted believers play a part in that promise being realised.
Prayer:
Lord, we lift up our persecuted brothers and sisters, asking for your protection and grace. May your word reach them in safety and bring them strength in their trials. Guide us to be discreet and wise in supporting them and thank you that their perseverance under trial brings them closer to you and the crown of life you have promised. Amen
