Reflection:
Today’s reading in John 1:14 is perhaps, the pinnacle of this study. This verse presents the absolute. God’s intervention into human history. Previously, God spoke through the words of chosen individuals, prophets. Whilst the source of the word was divine, the communication of the word was tainted by human imperfection. Here is the Christmas message in one statement: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling amongst us.” No glitz nor glamour, no tinsel nor baubles. The indisputable declaration that God loved us so much that he sent his Son to demonstrate that love. More than just words or thoughts. An actual moment in human history. Whilst critics may dispute the manner of celebration, the historical fact remains indisputable. It’s just that many choose not to recognise it.
God sent his Son for you and me to bridge the gulf that separated mankind from the Creator God.
Angelic hosts saw it and were amazed. Simple shepherds saw it and wondered. Intellectuals from the East saw it and worshipped.
Regardless of how, or whether this event we call Christmas is celebrated, it cannot diminish the absolute fact that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Have you allowed the Word who became flesh to dwell within you?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to intervene into human history. Thank you that he is able to dwell with me and demonstrate your infinite love for me. Help me to experience that love in every aspect of my life. Amen.
