Reflection: A key element of true wisdom—of clarity about how to live God’s way—is living considering the future. The “crown of life” mentioned here is an ancient sporting analogy about pressing on to the end and receiving a reward that will not perish (1 Corinthians 9:25). This gift comes to those who love God and neighbour and remain in right relationship with him. Current, momentary hardships can be viewed from an eternal perspective and part of the sometimes-painful process of making us fit for the future Kingdom.
For followers of Jesus the joy of what awaits can serve as a great motivator, guide, and light to all that we experience and endure along the way. At some points keeping our eyes fixed on the sweet promise of what awaits at the end might be the only thing that keeps us going.
Question: How has God’s promise of a grand future helped you to endure difficult times?
Prayer: Gracious God, give me the strength to endure hard times, and give me an eternal perspective on every part of my life. Fill me with your hope and love. Amen.
