Reflection: So far in reading Proverbs 4, we have seen that walking the path of wisdom (and avoiding the path of the wicked) is important. These next few verses give us a picture from nature to better understand what the paths are like.
We all understand the impact of the morning sun. If you are a parent, you have most likely experienced your kids waking up with the sun. For those without kids, you may enjoy a morning walk, or have a job that gets you up before the sunrise. If you’re at university, you may not have seen the sunrise in a while, but you still eventually head out the door with the sun shining on you, ready to face the day.
C.S. Lewis famously said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Following on from the analogy of sunshine and ‘light’, I believe a father figure can play a role as a ‘light bearer’ for our personal and spiritual lives. Our teaching, guidance and wisdom can penetrate the darkness and help others see the pitfalls. The presence of a father figure can diffuse the dark thoughts that can easily take hold of a mind.
All parents (and mentors) can be the constant source of light, truth and love for the next generation, which I believe can bring about growth in our churches, in the Kingdom of God and in our communities.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for the gift of the sun and the gift of your Son. Thank you that your light can shine through any darkness. Please help me to provide a source of light to the next generation in my life.
