Reflection: Courage
Have you pleaded for torment to be removed? Maybe like the apostle Paul you’ve felt crippled by it. Maybe like Jesus you’ve felt vulnerable ‘to the point of death’. We’re told that both men prayed to be freed (three times). Not to be! But in both cases vulnerability would showcase the power of God.
There’s a powerhouse of inspiration in the Garden of Gethsemane:
A vulnerable Messiah … like a lamb led to the slaughter.
An attentive Father … whose will will be done on earth as in heaven.
A God-appointed messenger to ‘com-forte’… to strengthen/comfort.
An obedient son … who’s willing to do the will of his father.
A courageous redeemer.
Pastor Tim Keller’s death in May 2023 saw the internet flooded with tributes to a man who practiced Psalm 91. In the face of death, he, like his suffering Saviour, found courage in the shelter of the Most High. God gave him a vision of universal glory within which was a speck of darkness — our world, with its temporary pain and darkness: ‘Everything will be alright, Tim’. “It was a moment of courage,” he said. “And I haven’t had many of those. But,” he went on to say, “more comforting than moments of courage is that our courageous Saviour holds on to us.” (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czihTs6q5zs)
Prayer:
Because you journey with me, Lord; because you hold me with your victorious hand, fear and anxiety are unwelcome company. Strengthen and reassure me. Inspire and cheer me on. (Isaiah 41:10 my paraphrase) And bring me, with all your people, to your eternal kingdom. Amen!
