Peace on earth
Hark! The herald angels sing, ‘Glory to the newborn King!’ Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.
We sing these words every year at Christmas time, but their origin is from that first Christmas, when the angelic choir visited lowly shepherds on a hill outside Jerusalem. The angels cried out, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven and peace on earth!’
This peace on earth was less about the end of earthly wars and more about peace between God and man. Jesus left His heavenly home to become Immanuel, God with us (Matt 1:23). He is the ‘Heaven-born Prince of Peace’. He was, ‘Born that man may no more die… born to give them second birth.’
Challenge
As you sing the words of the carols at Christmas, hark what God is teaching you through those words of old, for they are still alive today, bringing peace and hope.
Prayer
Lord, it’s so easy to just enjoy the tunes of the carols we sing at Christmas time. Help me to hear what You are revealing about Yourself in those ancient yet relevant truths.
