In God‘s grand plan to express his divine love to humanity, he used John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. The apostle John documented a significant event: “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29, NKJV)
On seeing Jesus, John called those present – and today by the Holy Spirit, the call remains – to:
Firstly, ‘Behold’. That word infers more than a casual glance; rather, a gaze, with a desire to understand. Today, there is an invitation to look again to the Saviour, with a genuine desire to know him more.
Secondly, acknowledge The Lamb of God. The Easter story takes place in the Passover week, which celebrated the deliverance and salvation of God’s people by a powerful God and the blood of a lamb. Ironically, Pontius Pilate thought it was his decision to crucify Jesus during the Passover week, when in fact the crucifixion had all been foretold in the events of the Old Testament.
As one author said, “it was a setup”. God was making a point. The Passover was a forecast of what was to come: the deliverance and salvation of all mankind through the death of God’s Son, the One who John called the Lamb of God, who…
…thirdly, ‘takes away the sins of the world’. Before Jesus, sacrifices only covered sin. But the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. No more sacrifices were needed. The power of sin was broken. Ordinary people can have a relationship with a Holy God.
Mankind had been separated from God through their sin. But through Jesus, that sin was not covered, but taken away. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus did this – once and for all! (See Hebrews 9:26-28 and 10:11-14).
In return, all he asks us to do, is remember him.
So, this Easter, let’s take the time to gaze upon the Lamb of God and behold him!
Prayer: Jesus, I set time aside to look to you, who died on the cross for us…and remembering you – I say thank you.
It doesn’t seem much in return, but I am grateful for your sacrifice.
