14Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel Beth Maakah and through the entire region of the Bikrites, who gathered together and followed him. 15All the troops with Joab came and besieged Sheba in Abel Beth Maakah. They built a siege ramp up to the city, and it stood against the outer fortifications. While they were battering the wall to bring it down, 16a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come here so I can speak to him.” 17He went toward her, and she asked, “Are you Joab?”
“I am,” he answered.
She said, “Listen to what your servant has to say.”
“I’m listening,” he said.
18She continued, “Long ago they used to say, ‘Get your answer at Abel,’ and that settled it. 19We are the peaceful and faithful in Israel. You are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up the Lord’s inheritance?”
20“Far be it from me!” Joab replied, “Far be it from me to swallow up or destroy! 21That is not the case. A man named Sheba son of Bikri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Hand over this one man, and I’ll withdraw from the city.”
The woman said to Joab, “His head will be thrown to you from the wall.”
22Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bikri and threw it to Joab. So he sounded the trumpet, and his men dispersed from the city, each returning to his home. And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.
Reflection: A Wise Woman
Following the grace story of Mephibosheth comes a little pocket of wisdom. A cut-throat story that pivots on the perspicacity of an unnamed woman. In a man’s world she’s just a voice, really. But a loud and convincing voice that averts a crisis.
There’s chaos aplenty in Israel. Not King David’s finest hour. He’s gone limp in the wake of his son Absolom’s defiance and death. Battles are being fought around David and on his behalf. One of these battles is here in this city under siege. The good guys are on the inside and the outside. But Sheba, the bad guy, is inside.
‘One man’s head for God’s reputation’ bargains a female voice from inside. A wise woman, that’s for sure! She’s astute to not just the city’s safety, but the bigger picture: the honour of the God of Israel and his faithful people.
She convinces Joab, on the outside, further convinces the townspeople inside, and Sheba’s head is severed (for proof of death). The threat is averted. Peace is preserved. Abel-beth-maacah retains its reputation of emanating godly wisdom. * And a courageous voice makes a difference.
Prayer:
O God, that You would slay the wicked—away from me, you bloodthirsty men—who speak of You deceitfully; Your enemies take Your name in vain. Do I not hate those who hate You, O LORD, and detest those who rise against You? I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them as my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:19-24
