Reflection: Stones that Worship
One of the fun things about watching little people is how they imbue inanimate objects with personality. They don’t have to learn that from Disney, though Disney does give us any number of examples. (I’m picturing the tea party in Beauty and the Beast.*)
Who knows, to God, all creation effusively praising him could look something like that, infinitely multiplied. Biblical poetry suffuses our imaginations with mountains leaping, hills carolling, trees applauding, skies preaching, day and night teaching. Creation is abundantly and infinitely responding to its Creator. It’s responding not just in worship, but groaning in anticipation of perfect worship.
The squall of this outdoor worship scene – cheering crowds flinging cloaks at a king on a colt on a rugged road, was not conducive to a conversation with the protestors. Jesus just popped the Pharisees’ pompous balloons with, If people didn’t, rocks would! Worship is always the King’s due. Praise will always trump silence.
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! they hollered. There was no visible angelic heavenly host this time, but the refrain of the crowd was ringing bells. Perhaps consciously they were remembering the shepherds’ witness of angel song. Unconsciously they were prophesying perfect worship: Peace in heaven!
Apparently stones are so ubiquitous in Israel that in lieu of flowers people put stones on graves. Silent stones of lament. But on that triumphal day of Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem, stones were at the ready to shout. Celebrating stones of Hallelujah!
I love to imagine the day when I’ll see you, the slain Lamb, and hear the new song, and when every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea will sing that song: Blessing and honour and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever!** Meanwhile…
Prayer:
All creatures of our God and king
Lift up your voices and with us sing
…Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
…Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in heav’n along
…Thou rising morn in praise rejoice
Ye light of evening find a voice
…Thou flowing water pure and clear
Make music for thy Lord to hear
…Thou fire so masterful and bright
That gives to man both warmth and light
…The flow’rs and fruits that in thee grow,
let them God’s glory also show,
…Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship God in humbleness,
…To God all thanks and praise belong!
Join in the everlasting song:
O sing ye, O sing ye, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
(hymn by St. Francis of Assisi, paraphrased by William H. Draper).
