Reflection: Celebrations Sweet ‘n Sour
‘So David went to bring up the ark of God…to the City of David with rejoicing …Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might… They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty.’ 2 Samuel 6:12, 14, 17—18 New International Version
A couple days ago we left King David in his angry, fearful confusion.
I mean, was it not with good intention that ‘[he] and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD with all kinds of wood instruments, harps, stringed instruments, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals’? (2 Samuel 6:5)
Was it not with well-meaning efforts they set out to return the Glory Box to its rightful place?
But in an instant, zap! All the celebrating stopped. You could hear a pin drop.
Everyone was unforgettably confronted with the alarming, lethal sovereignty of God.
No doubt that confrontation with glory had the king and his people bolting home like scared rabbits.
Do we even want this glory in our midst? (Hence the wait for a few thoughtful months.)
What about our covenant-keeping God? (Perhaps we should have another look at our side of the covenant.)
How will we ever bridge the gap?
Humbled, a few months later, David once more approached the ark of the Lord. With fitting worship – even abandon – he had the ark correctly returned* and placed ‘inside the tent that [he] had pitched for it.’
Where do you think glory belongs?
Prayer: Holy! Holy! Holy! LORD of hosts, the whole earth is bursting with your glory. (Isaiah 6:3 paraphrased).
