14 day plan

First Verses

Day 1 of 14

NIV

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Reflection

In the beginning God! This short simple opening verse of the Bible speaks of the utter dependence of everything on God. Why is there something rather than nothing? God! What existed before the universe began, before time itself began? God! Everything that exists, from the hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, down to the astounding complexity of the genetic code found inside each one of billions of cells in our bodies … God is the ultimate reason for the existence of all that makes up “life, the universe and everything.”

Take time to ponder the wonders of the created order. Ponder the vastness of the universe; ponder the amazing richness of life on this dust-speck planet earth; ponder all the findings of science, which reveals the hand of the creator; and ponder the love that God has for humans, made “in the image of God” for relationship with one another and with their Creator. Ponder and worship.

Prayer

Lord God, our God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! We stand in awe at the wonders of your creation. And we thank you for revealing yourself in both the book of Scripture and in the “book” of your mighty creative works. Help us to recognise your awesome greatness and forgive us when we try to squeeze you into our own image. You are Lord of all, and we praise and worship you.
