Psalms 92:1-2

Psalm 92

A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day.

1It is good to praise the Lord

and make music to your name, O Most High,

2proclaiming your love in the morning

and your faithfulness at night,

Reflection:

‘Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:

Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed,
 for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning,

great is your faithfulness.’

Lamentations 3:21-23

When our world is falling apart, we need to know there is something we can hold onto to keep us steady. We need to know that we won’t be overwhelmed or consumed.

When our world is falling apart, we need to know that we are not alone and have someone who will be with us. We need to know that there is someone who is compassionate and loving, who cares enough to hold us firmly and safely.

That something, that someone, is your God. Your God will keep you steady. Your God will hold you fast. Do you know why? Because he promised he would, and he always keeps his promises. God is faithful. What God says, he does. He is utterly dependable, reliable, trustworthy — he is faithful.

The writer of the book of Lamentations writes movingly of his experience of his world falling apart. But at the centre of the book, he speaks of what keeps him going: the faithfulness of God. Because of the Lord, there is hope, even in this most desperate of circumstances.

I recently caught up with two dear friends I’ve known for over thirty years. During our conversation, both talked about God’s faithfulness to them. Neither woman is sitting on a mountaintop. Both are facing difficult circumstances which have lasted for years. They know what it’s like to do life in the valley. They know that they might never see their troubles resolved, and peace restored. But they know their God is faithful.

Both women proclaimed God’s faithfulness and their testimonies encouraged my heart.  Reader, you too can bear testimony to God’s faithfulness in your life. Why not recall those times when God has been with you and held you firmly in his hands. And why not proclaim his faithfulness by sharing this story with your Christian brothers or sisters.  This is a habit you could build into your Sunday — and give thanks to the Lord for his faithfulness to you.

Prayer:

‘May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it’. Amen (1 Thes. 5:23-24)

1It is good to praise the Lord

and make music to your name, O Most High,

2proclaiming your love in the morning

and your faithfulness at night,

3to the music of the ten-stringed lyre

and the melody of the harp.

4For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;

I sing for joy at what your hands have done.

5How great are your works, Lord,

how profound your thoughts!

6Senseless people do not know,

fools do not understand,

7that though the wicked spring up like grass

and all evildoers flourish,

they will be destroyed forever.

8But you, Lord, are forever exalted.

9For surely your enemies, Lord,

surely your enemies will perish;

all evildoers will be scattered.

10You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox;

fine oils have been poured on me.

11My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;

my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.

12The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,

they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;

13planted in the house of the Lord,

they will flourish in the courts of our God.

14They will still bear fruit in old age,

they will stay fresh and green,

15proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;

he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”
