Reflection: Faithful obedience
In correcting the excesses of achievement addiction, the risk is that we tip too far in the opposite direction and disregard achievement altogether. Should we give everyone a trophy for participating? But in Jesus’ parable of the bags of gold, three servants are entrusted with money to invest while their master is away, “each according to his ability” (Matthew 25:15). The first two servants earn differing returns on investment but receive the same praise from their master. The last servant, however, makes no profit at all since he buries the money in the ground – and gets punished as a result.
The parable reminds us that it’s not the size or status of the achievement that matters so much as the faithful obedience of the one to whom the gift was given. We are each responsible to God for how we use the gifts he has given us. That’s something worth remembering as we walk the fine line between caring too much – and too little – about achievement.
Prayer: Gracious Father, help me see and take seriously the opportunities to serve you before me. Use my callings for your glory and for your kingdom. Amen.
